Somno is an educational sleep-coaching app based on CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) principles. We designed it to be local-first: by default your data lives on your device, and the cloud features below are optional and consent-gated. This policy explains exactly what we collect, when, and why.
Somno is provided by Somno. For privacy questions, contact us at phonglinhk52m@gmail.com.
The core of Somno works entirely on your device and is never required to leave it:
This data is stored locally on your device. If you never sign in and keep cloud sync off, none of it is transmitted to us.
If you choose to sign in (with Apple, Google, or as a guest) and leave "Sync to cloud" enabled in Settings, we back up your profile and night logs to our cloud provider (Supabase) so you can restore them or use the app across devices. This is governed by your consent toggle, which you can turn off at any time in Settings → Account.
We deliberately never sync the following, even when cloud sync is on:
You can delete your cloud account and its data at any time from Settings → Account (this is separate from turning sync off, which keeps the cloud copy).
Some guidance (for example the 2AM support message and your personalized diagnosis explanation) can be generated by an AI model (Anthropic's Claude). AI coaching only runs if the app is configured with a coaching endpoint; otherwise the app uses built-in, offline guidance and sends nothing.
When AI coaching runs, the app sends the context needed to generate that one response to our proxy server, which forwards it to Anthropic. This context may include your first name, your sleep type and schedule, your recent sleep numbers, and answers you gave about what you fear at night — including a free-text sentence if you wrote one. This information is used only to generate the immediate response. We do not use it to train AI models, and our proxy does not store the content of these requests beyond what is needed to process them. Your self-harm screening answer is never sent to the AI.
To understand whether the program is helping people (for example, how many users reach a first week of logging), we record a small set of anonymous milestone and retention events. These are:
To find and fix crashes and freezes, the app uses Apple's MetricKit to report anonymous crash and hang counts only. We do not receive stack traces or device identifiers through this channel; detailed crash reports remain in Apple's developer tools and are subject to Apple's privacy controls. This is gated by the same consent toggle as above.
If you allow notifications, we schedule a local morning reminder on your device. This does not send any data to us.
If you sign in with Apple or Google, that provider authenticates you and we receive a user identifier (and, depending on the provider and your choices, an email). We use it only to associate your synced data with your account. Their handling of your information is governed by their own privacy policies.
On-device data remains until you delete the app or clear it. Synced data remains until you delete your account. Anonymous analytics aggregates are retained to measure long-term trends and cannot be tied back to you.
Somno is not directed to children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
We may update this policy; we will revise the "Last updated" date and, for material changes, notify you in the app.
